Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. [2, blanks] xiii. 467pp. + 8 plates. Bound in the original cloth with blind-stamped titling. A presentation copy from Private John B. Bell (later Com. Sergt.), himself a member of the 85th Regiment, with his signature on the first blank: 'Compliments of J.B. Bell. Blairsville, Pa. Ap. 2. 1926' His signature appears to have been written twice; the original lightly, then again retraced for clarity, while the date seems to be by a different hand (likely that of the recipient.) As noted in the volume: 'A general idea of the life and conditions at Camp LaFayette can best be obtained by quoting a few excerpts from the diary of John B. Bell, who entered Camp LaFayette with his company on October 1, and who kept a daily record of the most important events occurring in camp.' Bell is quoted in the ensuing text over thirty times. GOOD. Shows marginal shelf rubbing along the edges, one corner bumped, the occasional light handling mark and scuff, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text and plates are clean and unmarked and the boards remain distinct. As pictured.
