A beautiful book in terrific condition. Only light cover wear. SEE PHOTOS. This is a volume from the Elzevier ten-volume series of the complete works of Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC). Books 7 and 8 are the complete Philosophicorum. This is book 2 only, corresponding to Volume 8. Published in 1642 by Elsevir. First Edition Thus. Square and tight. Pages are clean and unmarked with almost no foxing. Bound in full reddish-brown leather. The spine is elaborately gilt decorated. Triple ruled borders on the front and rear covers. All gilt is still bright and shiny. Title page features a handsome engraved illustration (i. e. the famous Elsevier tree printer's mark with the motto Non solus - not alone). SEE PHOTOS. Gorgeous marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Duodecimo. 2.75" wide by 5" tall. With the bookplate [SEE PHOTOS] of de Bourgevin Vialart de Moligny, possibly Charles Paul Jean Baptiste de Bourgevin Vialart, Count of Saint-Morys (1743-1795), who, according to Wikipedia, was adviser to the Grand Chamber of the Parliament of Paris, designer and art collector. He died as a general of the Royal Army during the Quiberon expedition on the island of Houat in 1795. His highly important art collection, including 12,644 drawings, was seized after his emigration in 1793, and handed over to the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1796-1797. Brown leather. Very good condition. Rebound in close matching leather with earlier board and spine leather overlaid. The leather near backstrip discolored, likely from adhesive removal. Pages are clean with occasional brief neat contemporary marginalia and underscoring. A few edge tears and old paper repairs. 16mo.
