Size of the engraved image 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, size overall 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. On good quality paper (not newspaper stock). Printed caption, identifying the subject below the image. Some very light foxing else very good and with good margins; ideal for framing. From "The National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages" issued as a supplement to "The Illustrated News of the World" which was published 1858-1864. With the original printed leaf of text giving biographical details of the subject.

Burgundy endpapers, sepiatone frontispieces, decorated title pages. **No dustjackets or slipcases.** A collection of essays & reviews by the British author, historian & politician, Lord Macaulay. Contents: Volume I - Machiavelli; Southey's Colloquies; Mr. Robert Montgomery's Poems; Civil Disabilities of the Jews; Moore's Life of Lord Byron; Boswell's Life of Johnson; The Pilgrim's Progress with a Life of John Bunyan; War of the Succession in Spain; Lord Bacon. Volume II - Gladstone on Church and State; Ranke's History of the Popes; Leigh Hunt - Dramatists of the Restoration; Frederic the Great; Madame D'Arblay; The Life and Writings of Addison. Both volumes have slight fading to spine colour and minor edge wear. Volume I has a small bump to bottom corner of approx. pages 225 to end of book. Volume II has a corner crease on front pastedwon endpaper, small soft crease at fore-edge of pages 1 to 42, small soft crease at top corner of preliminary pages, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block.

On front of 10.5 x 6.5 cm envelope. In fair condition, lightly aged, with the back flap torn at the tip. Reads: 'The / Lady Theresa Lewis / Kent House / Knightsbridge', with 'Macaulay' written below this at bottom left. See Image.

Marbled endpapers and edges matching boards. Lightly toned internally with infrequent spotting, heavier spotting to preliminaries and rear blanks. Bookplate to front flyleaf, minor glue tears on-top. Upper board sunned to top, light discolouration around boards. Minor edgewear. Very good.

Gilt lettering to spine. Marbled endpapers and edges. Vol I) previous owner's name in black ink to page 1, spotting to end papers and preliminaries and lightly throughout, wearing to leather some leather peeled away on back corners. Very good. Vol II) previous owner's name in black ink to page 1, spotting to end papers and very lightly sporadically throughout, wearing to leather, one piece of leather peeled away and repaired on front board. Very good. Macaulay was a British historian and politician. He served as the Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841. These are two attractive volumes of his essays.

Contemporary black full morocco for King's College London, with gilt titles and decoration to spines, and a large gilt college crest to upper of each volume. All edges gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. Prize plate to front pastedown of volume I, dated 1879. Spotting to endpapers and preliminaries. Black ink ownership to first blank of volume II. Some wear to binding extremities, carefully re-coloured. Very good.

Contemporary tan full calf for Hurstpierpoint College, with raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting brown and green labels, further gilt decoration to spines, and and the College motto stamped in gilt to boards. All edges gilt, and marbled endpapers with gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Prize plate to front pastedown of each volume, dated 1888. Lovely clean copies internally, though rather small print. Toning to spines, with much colour lost from the labels. Light general wear to bindings. Very good.

TWO: Autograph Note in the third person, 8 December 1859. 1p, 12mo. Lord Macaulay will do himself the honor of waiting on Sir G Cornewall and Lady Theresa Lewis to dinner next Tuesday . THREE: Envelope for Item Two, with printed pink penny stamp. Three postmarks, one from London on front and one from Kensington on back. Addressed to The / Lady Theresa Lewis / Kent House / Knightsbridge / SW , and initialed at bottom left M. FOUR: Autograph Letter Signed, 12 December 1859. 2pp, 12mo. This letter would be poignant in any event, but as the Oxford DNB notes, at the time of writing he was well aware that he did not have long to live. Written by Macaulay on the first leaf, with the recipient s autograph note on the recto of the second leaf: The last letter I received from Ld Macaulay. / He died Wednesday Decr. 28. / 1859 . The letter reads: Dear Lady Theresa Lewis, / I caught so bad a cold at the British Museum on Saturday that I am now condemned to slops and blisters, and that I have not the faintest hope of being able to get to Kent House to morrow I am extremely concerned that it should be so.
