Etat : Near fine. First edition. A beautiful hand-colored copy of Angus MacLise's first publication, issued by his high school friend Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press. Though perhaps best known as the first drummer for the Velvet Underground, Maclise is increasingly recognized for his later polygot artistic, poetic, and musical works - of which STRAIGHT FARTHEST BLOOD TOWARDS marks the start, and a fortuitous one. It was through this work that, according to Velvet Underground scholar Richie Unterberger, La Monte Young first became aware of MacLise, spotting a copy of SFBT at City Light Bookstore in 1961 - an event that led later that year to the pair performing together regularly, and later still to Young introducing MacLise to John Cale. Produced by Piero Heliczer, who Maclise befriended at Forest Hills High School in New York when they were still teens, STRAIGHT exists in two states: with hand-colored wrappers or without. While there is no known priority, in our experience the hand-colored are decidedly less common. Though not exactly rare in the market, OCLC locates just four copies. An auspicious and significant debut. . 6'' x 5.5'' folded; 6" x 22'' unfolded. Original letterpressed self-wrappers, featuring a block-print by Piero Heliczer, and with pink hand-painted details. Folded three times (as issued) to make eight panels numbered one through six (plus front and rear covers). Mild edgewear, rubbing. Else remarkably bright, clean, and sound.

No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. Ira Cohen, Angus Maclise [Bardo Matrix], Spirit Catcher Bookshop, Kathmandu, c. 1970s; Silkscreen on rice paper; 16 x 12 inches, 40.6 x 30.5 cm; Framed: This piece was acquired amongst a noted Bardo Matrix archive, and is attributed as such. The Bardo Matrix press was founded in Kathmandu in the early 1970s by original Velvet Underground drummer, artist, and poet Angus MacLise and poet, photographer, and publisher Ira Cohen. Along with issuing publications, posters, and broadsides by themselves and others, including Paul Bowles, Gregory Corso, Diane Di Prima, and Charles Henri Ford, they printed materials, such as this one, to be sold in The Spirit Catcher Bookshop, a gathering place for the hippie scene in Kathmandu. The thin rice paper remains incredibly well preserved, especially given its fragility, and exhibits a stunning woven texture. UV protected plexiglass with handsome maple framing, a very presentable piece with strong historical significance. Please contact us for special shipping rates.

First edition thus, first impression, of Angus MacLise's self-published poem. While MacLise is perhaps best known as the original drummer for the Velvet Underground, his collaborations with Fluxus and the Theatre of the Ridiculous, and his establishment of The Dead Language Press in Paris and the Bardo Matrix/Dreamweapon Press with Ira Cohen, MacLise's polyglot accomplishments extend beyond his musical contributions. The front cover is from a photograph by Ira Cohen, a red version of the same silhouette used for The Subliminal Report. This edition was preceded by a limited edition with facsimile MacLise holographs and a hand-tinted cover by Don Snyder, privately published by Snyder in 1972. Octavo, 16pp. Original white lokta paper wrappers printed in red with silhouette illustration, titles to front in black, lokta stock. A few shallow chips to extremities of front wrapper, a touch of offsetting to p. 1, else a near-fine copy, bright and fresh.
