32pp, disbound with some separating, lightly foxed. Good+. General Mahone used his war record and railroad connections to become a political powerhouse, and leader of the Virginia 'Readjusters'-- more or less populists who favored a reduction in state indebtedness-- in their battles against the 'Stalwarts.' He signs this hard-hitting pamphlet in type on page 16, 'MAHONE.' Its dateline is Petersburg, 30 March 1887. Many bitter Virginians viewed him as a demagogue who had-- unfairly, in their eyes-- built his success on support from the newly-enfranchised Negro voters. Here he denounces the Democrats for their broken promise to repeal the Internal Revenue Taxes. OCLC 8530750 [3- UNC, Lib. VA, VA Hist. Soc.] [as of 6/12].

General Mahone used his war record and railroad connections to become a political powerhouse, and leader of the Virginia 'Readjusters'-- more or less populists who favored a reduction in state indebtedness-- in their battles against the 'Stalwarts.' Many bitter Virginians viewed him as a demagogue who had-- unfairly, in their eyes-- built his success on support from newly-enfranchised Negro voters. This pamphlet denounces the Democratic Party's "usual Bourbon impotence in dealing with public affairs."
