"It used to be that everyone read the "notorious" Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733). He was a great satirist and came to have a profound impact on economics, ethics, and social philosophy. The Fable of the Bees begins with a poem and continues with a number of essays and dialogues. It is all tied together by the startling and original idea that "private vices" (self-interest) lead to "publick benefits" (the development and operation of society). From that simple beginning, Mandeville saw that orderly social structures (such as law, language, the market, and even the growth of knowledge) were a spontaneous growth developing out of individual human actions.".

2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 8 p.l., 477; 1 p.l., xxx, 432, [24]index. woodcut ornaments & initials. later calf, rebacked (rubbed, front cover of Vol. I loose). armorial bookplate of George Goddard Knowles. Sixth Edition of Vol. I; Second Edition of Vol. II. Mandeville s most famous and controversial work, in which he advanced the view that virtue derives from the practice of selfish instincts, and that the public prosperity is dependent upon private vices. His original intention was probably to satirize the political state of England in 1705, when the Tories were accusing Marlborough and the ministry of advocating the French war for personal reasons. The ironical nature of his commentary on the hypocrisies of artificial society was overlooked by his contemporaries, and the Fable was widely attacked and condemned, notably by Bishop Berkeley, Francis Hutcheson, and Archibald Campbell. One signature (pp.179-190) has detached, but other than this the text block is firm. A major work in the history of medical literature, it is the first to discuss what would later become known as psychosomatic illness. It is also a complex literary creation, by the Anglo-Dutch doctor and philosopher, who is best known as the author of The Fable of the Bees. Composed of three dialogues between a physician and two of his patients, Mandeville s Treatise mirrors the digressive structure of a talking cure, akin to that which Sigmund Freud would champion two centuries later. Thanks to the soothing and enlightening effects of this casual conversation, the physician Mandeville demonstrates the healing power of words for a class of patients that he presents as men of learning who need above all to be addressed in their own language. Mandeville s aim was to delineate his own cure for hypochondria and hysteria, which consisted of a talking cure followed by diet and exercise, but also to discuss the practice of medicine in England and continental Europe at a time when physicians were beginning to lose ground to apothecaries. This book discusses hypochonriack and hysterick diseases through a series of dialogues between a physician, Philopirio, and his patients, Misomedon and Polytheca" "A treatise of the hypochondriack and hysterick passions, vulgarly call'd the hypo in men and vapours in women; in which the symptoms, causes, and cure of those diseases are set forth after a method entirely new. The whole interspers'd with instructive discourses on the real art of physick it self; and entertaining remarks on the modern practice of physicians and apothecaries . In three dialogues".
