Cover is clean, with age fading . rubbing along the edges, hinges, corners, joins, head and tail, bumping to corners, joints, head and tail, straight hinges and edges, and clearly legible and distinct lettering, artwork and design. Dust Jacket is unclipped (reflecting original USD $7.50 price) and age mildly toned, showing considerable chipping and rubbing throughout, particularly prominent along wraps, hinges, head, tail and corners, entailing varying degrees of loss. [no date]. (Leatherbound) Very good. 595pp, [1]. Undated (presumed 1928). Short 8vo. Bound in full, acid-treated tan leather; similar to the so-called "tree leather" binding style. Spine in five compartments, raised bands with simple ruled decoration in gilt; title compartment in dark-brown leather, lettered in gilt; publisher likewise at the foot of the spine. Slight bowing to boards. Previous owner's name sticker at head of ffep. Else internally remarkably bright and clean. Early signs of starting at frontispiece, remaining entirely secure. Illustrated with monochrome plates, maps. Monochrome portrait frontispiece of Hernando Cortés (from the famous oil painting. Although the copyright page states "Printed in Mexico by special permission of George Routledge & Sons, Ltd. London," this edition appears to be on British sheets from Stephen Austin & Sons (Hertford), and bound and distributed in Mexico.
