Text is clean and bright, no marks. Thirteen illustrations throughout including frontis. Clipped DJ shows mild edgewear, tiny chips and several small closed tears. Being selections from 'Those That Will Not Work' the fourth volume of 'London Labour and the London Poor' A volume concerned with the lawless, with outcasts of with the enemies of society, who supported themselves by preying upon the vice or the credulity of their more prosperous neighbors. A remarkably vivid picture of an aspect of Victorian life that few other Victorian writers had ever dared to glance at: the teeming underworld of 19th century London, whose headquarters- the night-houses, divans and oyster-bars which blazed with light till dawn- were established a few yards from what is today Picadilly Circus.
