Early publication by the Portland fine press pioneer, one of 925 unnumbered copies of the Irish M.P.'s 466 prose versions of 'Khayyám''s verse, taken from the London edition of 1889. LXXVII: "Question me not upon the vagaries of this world, nor of the things that yet may be. Look upon this present hour as plunder from destiny. Vex not thyself about the past, nor plague me about the future." Tall sort of softcover, with stiff card covers, yapp edges, floral decoration; one of the "Bibelot Series", as noted on the back cover. As pictured; worn, chipped, tanned, lightly creased; minor spotting withing, a few browned spots at the gutters. Contents clean, on mostly still-bright laid paper, printed in tiny italic type. Text clean; [131] pages, of which about 25 are introductory material. Size: 4½" by 8½".

This copy is bound in full brown calf with gilt borders front and rear and the gilt device of the City of London School to the front. The spine has raised bands to six compartments with the title and author to a green panel in the second and gilt decoration and binding to the rest There are marbled endpapers and blind dentelles to the inside and matching marbled page edges all round. the text block is tight, white, bright and square. Justin McCarthy (22 November 1830 24 April 1912) was an Irish nationalist and Liberal historian, novelist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1879 to 1900, taking his seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. McCarthy's real bent was towards literature. His earliest publications were novels, some of which, such as A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875), Miss Misanthrope (1878), Donna Quixote (1879), attained considerable popularity. His most important work is his History of Our Own Times (vols. i.iv., 1879 1880; vol. v., 1897),which treats of the period between Queen Victoria's accession and her Diamond Jubilee. Easily and delightfully written, and on the whole eminently sane and moderate, these volumes form a brilliant piece of narrative from a Liberal standpoint. This book weighs almost 1.25 Kilos so overseas customer will need to be quoted postage costs. Ref Z7 Size: 568pp.

All volumes internally very clean and bright, free from foxingspotting etc. Vols One and Four are beginning to split at upperedge of spinefront cover where the leather is worn and brittle but still firmly attached.

Set is complete as listed showing 25 illustrations of the young Queen Victoria in total (one listed portrait is on the title page and one Indian Ivory Card has two side-by-side portraits of the Princess Victoria). Clamshell portfolio binding with red cloth hardcover boards with stamped gilt lettering and embossed gold medallion of the young queen on the cover. The covers have heavy wear to the edges and soiling; the spine is reinforced with tape. The elephant folio plates are in excellent state with light age toning and minor nicks to the edges; all are very clean and ready for framing. Exceptional collection as such. This rare portfolio was published in 1897 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and other copies are kept as part of the Royal Collection. Contemporary brown morocco by Petrus Ruban [gilt stamp on doublure], triple fillets on boards, 5 raised bands with gilt titling and decorations in compartments, floral scrolls and fillets in gilt on turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Very slight wear to front hinge, few faint spots, interior clean and bright, binding tight and square. [Potter, 348]. A beautifully printed and elegantly-bound first edition of the PROSE TRANSLATION by Justin Huntley McCarthy (1859 - 1936). An Irish author and nationalist politician, he was a member of Parliament, and who wrote various novels, plays, poetical pieces and short histories, learning the Persian language with the sole purpose of being able to translate this text. David Nutt published his prose translations of 466 Khayyám quatrains, with a reprint in 1898 and a further reissue by Thomas B. Mosher in 1896 in his Bibelot series. The binding is by Petrus Ruban (1851-1929), an important art nouveau binder The poetry in quatrains (rubÄ Ê¿iyÄ t) by OMAR KHAYYÁM (1048 - 1131) -the Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet- became wildly popular during the Orientalist craze of fin-de-siècle Europe. Several verse and prose translations in English, French, German, and Russian were published, starting in 1859 with the verse translation of Edward FitzGerald in 1859: "Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia.".
