Originalhardcover. Etat : Gut. Nachdruck von 1933. 400 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - PREFACE -- The purpose of this book is to give an account of the Gibbon Controversy, which began in 1776, when the first volume of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, with its celebrated Chapters XV and XVI, was published, and it has continued even to the present. The author endeavours to set forth, on the one hand, the bitter and subversive attack which Gibbon has made upon Christianity in his History, and, on the other, the replies of his opponents and the comments of his friends. If the work has any significance, it will reveal that the Controversy has been of larger proportions than has generally been known, and that many of Gibbon s opponents have been men of greater interest and ability than has commonly been supposed. -- The book does not include discussion of the merits of the opposing positions taken by Gibbon and his adversaries, nor does it include treatment of Gibbon s sources, authorities, and psychological determinants. For a complete study of the Controversy, it might well be expected that these be made. The author, however, must reserve these other phases for the future. -- In gathering material for this treatise, the author has enjoyed the use of several important libraries: namely, the British Museum, the Bodleian, the New York Public, the Columbia University, the Union Theological Seminary, the Duke University, and the Congressional. Several other libraries have placed books at his disposal, through the university exchange relationship. -- Here and there, despite assiduous efforts, he has failed to find an attack on Gibbon which he has somewhere seen mentioned. He regrets that he has not succeeded. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
