Rebound in full tan leather with gilt stamped spine; new endpapers. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Leather is lightly shelf soiled, minor fading to spine. Interior pages are age-toned. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The First Missouri Brigade served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It was mostly recruited from members of the Missouri State Guard a secessionist force formed from the Missouri Volunteer Militia when the allegiance of the state was disputed. The brigade was first formed during the winter of 1861-62 as the first brigade of the division commanded by Sterling Price. It was initially led and drilled by Lewis Henry Little. In September 1862, Little was promoted to command of the division and the brigade was then commanded by Elijah Gates. In March 1863, Francis Cockrell took command of the brigade and led it for most of the remaining war. The unit had its last stand under Col. James McCown at the Battle of Fort Blakeley in April 1865. Anderson describes major actions in the western theater, including the evacuation of Corinth, the battles of Iuka and Corinth, and the Vicksburg campaign. REFERENCES: DORN II #2577; COULTER Travels in the Confederate States 7: "Well-written, even-tempered, observant account of four years' service . this is among the best of all accounts relating to the South during the war, being more a genuine travel narrative than a war record." HOWES A-227, "aa." NEVINS I, pg. 51: "One of the better Confederate narratives; written by an upper-class Southerner and strongly revealing for social conditions in the Confederacy.".
