Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. xiii, (3), 318 pages; Clean and secure in original binding in very good dustjacket with a crease in rear flap. When newsman John Mecklin became Public Affairs Officer of the American Embassy in Saigon, he also became a lightning rid of a stormy controversy. As a senior officer of the U.S. Mission from May 1962 to January 1964, he was intimately involved with Mission operations. He observed at close hand the break-down in communications between the American government and the press. He watched as American support for the Diem regime disintegrated and the Vietnamese lost the will to fight the Communist guerillas. He met with President Kennedy to discuss these developments which resulted in a new directive to level with the Press -- a directive which labeled Mecklin as a trouble-maker in the official community. On a second trip he participated in policy discussions that led to a withdrawal of American support for Diem. In this book Mecklin expands his analysis of the situation and offers insight for the next developments in the war.
