Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. Handsomely constructed in marbled paper over boards, three-quarters red Morocco leather, with five raised bands to spine, gilt-tooled title in one compartment, and measuring 8 3/4" x 12" wide and tall, respectively. Marbled paper endpapers. Literally hundreds of heads and tails, initials, drawings, illustrations, black-and-white and duotone, and quite lovely. Some are full-page, protected by tissue guard. A massive, heavy volume that looks remarkably handsome on the shelf. Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was born 21 February 1815 ? 31 January 1891 and became an outstanding, influential French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon. A lovely duotone of him graces the frontis here. A Wikipedia entry about him notes that Meissonier "was acclaimed both for his mastery of fine detail and assiduous craftsmanship. The English art critic John Ruskin examined his work at length under a magnifying glass, "marvelling at Meissonier's manual dexterity and eye for fascinating minutiae'" This is an absolutely gorgeous copy of this massive work devoted to the work and life of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, in French language, with an attendant artist biography of the artist by M.E. Greard.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
