Full page with two wood engravings from the August 16, 1879 issue of The London Illustrated News depicting Sketches of The Zulu War - Rear Guard of the 99th Regiment Crossing the Amatikulu River AND Three Generals Watching for the Returm of the Zulu Ambassadors. First engraving: The Siege of Eshowe took place during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The siege was part of a three-pronged attack on the Zulu Impis of king Cetshwayo at Ulundi. After an incursion as far as Eshowe (then also known as Fort Ekowe or kwaMondi) Colonel Charles Pearson was besieged there for two months by the Zulus. Lord Chelmsford led the relief column, consisting of 3,390 Europeans and 2,280 Africans to Eshowe. The artillery with the column consisted of two 9-pounder guns, four 24-pounder Congreve rockets tubes and two Gatling guns. After fighting the Battle of Gingindlovu, a British victory, the relief column entered Eshowe on 3 April, led by the pipers of the 91st Highlanders. On 23rd Jan Pearson's division completed their march to Eshowe. The 2nd division, commanded by Colonel Wellman of the 99th Regiment, arrived on 24th. The Rear Guard approached from the Lower Drift escorted by 5 companies of the 99th and NNC. ***********Second engraving: The Zulu Ambassadors sent by King Cetewayo to sue for peace were detained some days at Inodwengu Camp for the General's reply to their message. Lord Chelmsford refused to hear of peace till the guns captured by the Zulus at Isandhlwana should be restored. On June 28, therefore, Cetewayo's messengers were sent back to him, with an suggestion that the British would advance to the River Umvolosi, but advance no further until July 3 giving time for the Zulus to return the guns and lay down arms. The Zulus did not comply and conflict resumed on July 4. Additional shipping charge may apply.

Print. Etat : Very Good+. First Edition. The Illustrated London News; No. 2094; Vol. LXXV; 1 pages; Image measures 14.5 X 9 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page wood engraving from the August 2, 1879 issue of The London Illustrated News depicting The Zulu War - View of the Spot where the Prince Imperial was Killed, Looking East From a Sketch by Our Special Artist , Mr. Melton Prior. Napoleon Eugene Louis Jean Joseph, also known as Louis-Napoléon, was the only child of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, and Empress Eugénie. The Prince Imperial of the French served with the British army during the Anglo-Zulu War. Lord Chelmsford, mindful of Empress Eugenie's concerns for her sons safety, attached the Prince to the staff of Colonel Richard Harrison of the Royal Engineers, where it was felt he could be active but safe. Harrison was responsible for the column's transport and for reconnaissance of the forward route on the way to Ulundi, the Zulu capital. On the morning of 1 June 1879, the troop set out, earlier than intended and without the full escort, largely owing to Louis's impatience. Led by Carey, the scouts rode deeper into Zululand. Without Harrison or Buller present to restrain him, the Prince took command from Carey, even though the latter had seniority. At noon, the troop was halted at a temporarily deserted kraal while Louis and Carey made some sketches of the terrain, and used part of the thatch to make a fire. No lookout was posted. As they were preparing to leave, about 40 Zulus fired upon them and rushed towards them. The Prince Imperial was killed in the skirmish. Shortly afterwards his godmother Queen Victoria ordered a memorial to be built on the site of his death. Additional shipping charge may apply.
