"Peu de livres sur le jazz ont suscité autant d enthousiasme que celui du clarinettiste et saxophoniste Mezz Mezzrow ; le brûlant récit qu il fait de sa vie a transporté des générations de lecteurs. Mezzrow raconte tout : son enfance et son adolescence à Chicago, sa découverte du blues en prison, ses premiers contacts avec les musiciens de jazz, dans la banlieue ouest de Chicago. Il y a son travail acharné, la drogue, dont il est dépendant et dealer ; il y a surtout ses rencontres avec les plus grands : Louis Armstrong, Sydney Bechet, Tommy Ladnier À New York, il devient producteur de disques et enregistre avec Bechet.
