Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Photos, Map (illustrateur). Second, Revised. This is the story of the brothers Newman who were instrumental in opening up the north western section of the South Island to coach transport in the 1870s with coaches from Nelson to the West Coast on new roads, although they would not be recognised as such today. They greatly extended the services offered and later became pioneers in the motor coach industry as horse gave way to bus. The Newman firm became one of the largest operators in NZ. This is a history of an industry, as well as a company and includes the reminiscences of drivers, passengers and those in the support services. First published in 1953, reprinted 1954, this revised and enlarged edition in 1965. 204 pages including index, 60 b/w photos, map. Light tan hard covers with red spine titles VG+, small, neat ink name top FFEP, dealer stamp lower centre, text block otherwise excellent. Felt pen stripe across vertical page edges. Colour art coaching scene DJ VG+ with few tiny chips.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Reed, Wellington, 1965, revised and enlarged edition; 8vo, 150 x 220mm, pp204, 60 photographic illustrations; fawn boards, pictorial dustwrapper of a coach and four bowling along a mountainous country road; neat presentation inscription on the front fly; very good copy in a dust wrapper slightly torn or creased in places but without loss. . . . The book, by a well-regarded and experienced journalist, is a historical account of the opening up of the road systems of the northern provinces of New Zealand's South Island following the large scale introduction of coaching services. In particular it's the story of two young men, Harry and Tom Newman, who pioneered such road travel, moving from horse drawn coaches to motor cars as the horse was being superseded and then on to using motor coaches while spreading out wider and wider, eventually into the North Island, ther motor coach service network.
