Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of John Florio's tanslation, the first into English from French. Three parts in one volume with additional title pages for books two and three. Pages are 10 5/8 in. x 7 1/8 in. Bound with large portions of the front and rear leather from the original, or an early, binding laid down on a later leather rebinding. This old leather is decorated in a contemporary Cambridge-style blind-paneled calf, center panel tinted dark brown, with stamped decorations. Condition: Older leather is darkened and worn. More recent leather is fine, binding is tight and square. Early end-papers with a couple former owners' names. The title page has been professionally framed with paper to replace chipped edges, and remounted. The next two pages have outer edge repairs to the paper. The preliminary pages are darkened as are the final few pages. Occasional light toning near page edges. Water, or ink, stain along bottom edge of final 100 pages. No text is effected. Otherwise the paper is generally clean and strong; a very good, enjoyable copy of the first edition of a classic of the late Renaissance.
