Octavo, boards. First edition. First printing with code "42 R" on page 307. Collects ten stories with introduction by Lester del Rey and afterword by Moore. "Ten memorable stories from the 1930s and 1940s. The earlier pieces, such as 'Shambleau,' tend to be fantastic romances in a sword-and-sorcery vein. The later items, notably 'No Woman Born' and 'Vintage Season,' are classic SF of a slightly harder-edged type. Catherine Moore was undoubtedly the most talented female SF writer in America prior to the emergence of Leigh Brackett." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 31. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-782. Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 173-77. Issued by the Science Fiction Book Club. A couple of mild rubs to the boards, else a fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with mild crease at upper front spine fold and touch of rubbing to corner tips. (#169290).

A significant inscription from a fine writer to an important editor, agent and fan in the science fiction field. See Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature II, pp. 805-07. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. A lovely copy. Provenance: Bookplate of Harold C. Worden affixed to the front paste-down. A copy perhaps given earlier by C. L. Moore to one of the Becks, probably Clyde Beck, brother of Claire and Groo Beck, editors of SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW (later SCIENCE FICTION CRITIC), accompanied by two typewritten letters, the first dated 14 October 1956 to "Dear Mr. Beck" from Henry Kuttner who is seeking information on C. L. Moore's "Werewolf," an "unfinished story" that may have been published in the second issue of LEAVES. Beck sent the Kuttners a copy of LEAVES II and received a typewritten letter from C. L. Moore (signed "Catherine Moore Kuttner") dated 6 November 1956 thanking Beck for his "very generous gift" and that his "generosity makes it possible finally to complete my file of those early stories of mine." In return she hopes Beck will "accept a collection of the C. L. Moore stories which I'm sending off to you today." The two issues LEAVES were published by Robert Barlow, H. P. Lovecraft's friend, correspondent and literary executor, who the Moore's "both liked and admired very much" and through whom acquired "HPL's copies of the M. R. James books ." (#172568).
