En année de parution et peu courante reliure de "Livre-échange", ce recueil de 10 nouvelles publiées en revues en 1885-1886 par Guy de MAUPASSANT (1850-1893): "La Petite Roque", "L'Épave", "L'Ermite", "Mademoiselle Perle", "Rosalie Prudent", "Sur les chats", "Sauvée", "Madame Parisse", "Julie Romain" et "Le Père Amable"; mention (fictive ?) de 16è édition. Ouvrage défectueux, certes, mais un spécimen de ces livres du réseau de lecture organisé en 1882 à l'initiative d'Étienne Molles-Puyredon, représentant en commerce de la manufacture d orfèvrerie Christofle, afin de permettre aux voyageurs de commerce de lire à moindre coût dans leurs longs trajets en train.: achetés 3,50 francs, les livres, en dépôt dans les hôtels des villes du réseau, pouvaient ensuite être échangés moyennant 50 centimes. 24 pages vertes spéciales au réseau insérées dans la reliure, avec 3 timbres-contrôle (arrivée du livre) contrecollés (d'hôtels de Saumur, Clermont-Ferrand et Alais): liste des dépositaires et pages d'annonces publicitaires (dont un assureur pour voyageurs de commerce !); 1er plat signé Charles Magnier et ses fils.
