2005 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1931). x + 207pp with b/w illus This is a collection of narratives of German U-Boat sailors, members of the U-Boat Fellowship, illustrated with b/w photos and drawings by Claus Bergen, a war artist with the German Fleet. Commander Neureuther, in his epilogue, comments that seldom can there have been so closely knit a body of men as that little company that faced their common fate within the narrow compass of a submarine. The bonds that united them have outlasted the years that followed the war. Life in a submarine in those early days was no picnic as these stories testify. In all there are 25 of them varying in length from 59 pages to as few as two covering a wide variety of anecdotes. One is entitled Sir Roger Casementâ s last voyage, describing briefly U 19â s operation to put him ashore in Tralee Bay in April 1916; less than four months later he was captured and hanged.
