Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Copyright 1940. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled largely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by association with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, recourse was had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansions which to this day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the vogues and fashions of the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acclimated, however, such vogues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, heavy fading to color at top edge of boards, light fading to color on spine. Dust jacket has light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom edge of spine and flap-folds, creasing on top 3" of spine, slight browning on spine, light rubbing, one small tear archivally taped.
