New Zealand's long, vastly indented, often treacherous coast has been the subject to charting since the first European explorer-navigators arrived --- notably Tasman. D'Urville and Cook. The coastline charts compiled by the latter still amaze for their accuracy. Early harbour charts were later produced by local mariners, with the Royal Navy taking over detailed coastline surveys. Post WWII the NZ Navytoo over these responsibilities using the former Australian frigate Lachlan, which joined the Kiwi navy on a three year loan in 1969. As well as working off NZ this ship also carried out extensive charting work throughout the South Pacific. Lachlan was to serve the RNZN in the survey role till 1974. Rear Admiral Ross, in his book, tells well the story of the ships and men, their achievements, trials and dangers, engaged in these coastal and off shore surveys. 277 pages including four appendices, bibliography, index. Blue hard covers with silver spine titles VG+ with trace wear spine base, shadow of erased name top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Colour pictorial wrap-round DJ with green maritime chart background VG with two short vertical tears at spine top.

Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Photos (illustrateur). 1st. New Zealand's cost is rugged and stormy and in the early days of settlement many ships, the main mode transport, were wrecked and it became apparant that particularly dangerous locations should be marked by lights to guide and warn mariners. Beacons and some primative lighs were positioned but it was 1850 before the fist permanent and substantial lighthouse was erected, at Pencarrow Head on the Wellington Harbour approaches. (The author records that this first light marked another first with a Mrs Bennett as its first keeper.) From that point the account follows the story of the construction, maintenance and servicing of the many subsequent lights, the upgrading of lighthouse technology to the point where the process of demanning and automating the lighthouses was under way. In this impressive study of NZ lighthouses the men, women and children who watched over the lights, almost always siutuated in lonely, isolated and tempestuous locations, are not overlooked. A worthy addition to any collection on NZ maritime history. First editioin of 1975 from Dunmore Press, 156 pages including bibliography and index,.18 b/w photos. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, internally NF, no inscriptions, Colour pictorial DJ also VG+.
