This is in the decorated red cloth - thought to be an earlier varient binding preceeding the fancier - orange higly decorated, and multi-color issue. Red and black lettered title page with all of the photo illustrations including the center-fold plate of the orchestra. Used fair to good minus with obvious wear - no markings. Scarce in any condition.

First edition, first printing Most likely the first book on the subject of jazz published in America. Nicely illustrated throughout. Very good boards with trifle use to the top of the spine. With vintage photographs of various musicians.

Would be Near Fine except for remains of a bookplate which has been removed from the front pastedown. Boards remain very bright with only slight scuffing to corners. The fore-edges are a bit dusty. One folded page corner has been reinforced with (old) tape.The dust jacket is worn through in several spots, has four chips and two closed tears, and has been reinforced with scotch tape.It has been price clipped. ** Author Henry O. Osgood writes what has been called the first book about American jazz music, which he describes as "a state of mind--the spirit of the thing-- rather than any particular expression of it." With chapters on the early pioneers: Whiteman, Berlin, Grofe, Gershwin, Lewis, Lopez and Jones. ** Osgood was an editor of New York's Musical Courier, assistant conductor of the Munich Royal Opera, as well as a composer.
