Hardcover. 488pp. Small octavo [20 cm] 1/4 black cloth with brown paper covered boards, a gilt stamped title on the spine, and a small gilt stamped design on the front board. Illustrated endsheets. Very good. The extremities are very gently bumped, faded and rubbed, and the underlying boards are peeking through at the bottom corners. There is a thin, 1 inch long indentation in the spine. The top edge of the text block is a little scratched. There is a bookseller's small label on the half title page, and there is a previous owner's name, with a brief notation on the verso of the half title page. There are several tiny ink stains on the title page. Minor marginalia in pencil on the contents pages. The pages are mildly yellowed. In a worn and torn dust jacket. The front inside flap is missing. From the Introduction- "The author of 'Strange Stories' was a native of Tzu-ch'uan, in the province of Shan-tung. His family name was P'u; his particular name was Sung-ling; and the designation or literary epithet by which, in accordance with Chinese usage, he was commonly known among his friends, was Liu-hsien.".
