First edition, hardcover in black cloth with white titling, Bleiler title with a frontispiece by Lynd Ward, has a light lean to the binding, slight bumps to spine ends and cover corners with cloth starting to wear through at corners, faint rubbing to covers with some flaking to lettering at end of title on front and spine, and a previous owner's plate to front pastedown, otherwise a solid Good+ copy in a Good dust jacket, which has bumps with short chips and tears to spine ends and corners, tape repairs to exterior of corners, spine ends and along edges and hinges, sunning with a couple cross tears to spine, and light rubbing to covers.

First edition of this mystery/horror tale about a chemist and his bacteriologist protegà who unwittingly wreak havoc upon the public. Laing (1903-81), an American novelist and poet was also the author of the horror/mystery tale The cadaver of Gideon Wyck. A graduate of Dartmouth, he later there became an English professor as well as assistant librarian of the University Library. Laing also collaborated with Painter (? - ?) on The glass centipede.
