An artistic and architectural work from English printer, publisher and patron of the arts Thomas Combe. Illustrated plates are accompanied by descriptive passages from Combe, offering the dimensions of the fonts depicted alongside an account of their history and architectural style.Collated, with 127 plates of wood cut illustrations of baptismal fonts, the work of British architectural wood engraver Orlando Jewitt. Specialising in illustrations of Gothic architecture, his illustrations were widely used between 1820 and 1870. He also produced numerous prints used for seals and bookplates.With the contemporary owner's bookplate of Rev. W. S. Salman to the front pastedown. In the original full calf binding. Rubbing to joints, back strip and spine head and tail. Contemporary owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd mark.
