The homes of 17 authors are described and illustrated with views of their residences from original drawings (and two dagguerrotypes) and a facsimile of a manuscript from each author. Illustrations include 20 steel engravings (inc. frontispiece) and 15 wood engraved vignettes (13 of which are color tinted) . Frontis illustration of Everett's Library. 16 facsimiles of manuscripts. Featured authors include: Audubon, Paulding, Irving, Bryant, Bancroft, Dana, Prescott, Sedgwick, Cooper, Everett, Emerson, Simms, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Webster, Kennedy, Lowell, Halleck.
