Card covers, 232pp, b&w plates. light wear to card edges; a near fine copy. Originally published in 1919 as 'At All Costs'. Captain Bill Cull he fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front where he was captured by the Germans and was a POW until the end of the war . As a young infantry officer on the Allied side of the Western Front, Cull frequently led patrols out into No Man's Land and raids on the German trenches. He took part in bitter fighting on the Somme at Pozieres, and in February 1917 was severely wounded in a futile attack on the German trenches near Warlencourt, where he was taken prisoner by the Germans. Having survived the ordeal of battle, Cull spent the remainder of the war on the German side of the wire. The first half of Both Sides of the Wire includes one brief chapter on Egypt and Gallipoli but mainly focusses on his experiences on the Western Front with the 22nd Battalion AIF in the months leading up to his capture. The second half is a candid portrayal of his experiences as a prisoner of war in the hands of the Germans. Cull endured many months of agony as he recovered in prison camps in occupied France and Germany- surviving in spite of German doctors' early predictions that he would not live through his first night in captivity. Aaron Pegram has written the introduction, epilogue and notes.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First edition. Thick quarto. Contemporary quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, red morocco spine label. Contemporary owner name in faint pencil on front free endpaper: "William H. Pegram, Sussex County, Virginia." The boards are rubbed and worn at the joints and edges of the boards, intermittent toning and light scattered foxing, lower right corner of front free endpaper is torn away, good or better. The front pastedown is inscribed (February 1840) in memoriam to Charles Follen, a Harvard professor and radical abolitionist who had perished on board the steamship *Lexington* when it burst into flames off of Long Island on January 13, 1840. A curious and compelling association copy between William H. Pegram, a pro-slavery Virginia delegate for the Session of 1833-34 (in 1832 he advertised a $30 reward for a runaway "negro fellow named Willis"); and Charles Follen, a leading abolitionist fired by Harvard for his abolitionist statements. Follen was a close friend and associate of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and the prominent Unitarian minister William Ellery Channing. This volume, of which there are no recorded copies in *OCLC*, includes a Document (No. 53) relating to the "Removal of Free Persons of Colour . willing to emigrate to the western coast of Africa ." and a Bill (No. 7, "To alter and amend the law concerning Slaves, Free Negroes and Mulattoes") making it illegal "for any free negro or mulatto to migrate or come into this commonwealth, from any state of this Union, or from any foreign country . whether for the purpose of permanent settlement or temporary residence . ." Also included is a Proclamation by Andrew Jackson and numerous other documents and bills. A scarce copy with an intriguing association.
