First edition. Episodic novel set in imperial India, mostly criminal investigations of inspector Hillary, aided by the Kurumba, a fakir with genuine supernatural powers. Magical feats include clairvoyance and induced hallucinations, conjuring bats out of thin air, and giving a miscreant the soul of a monkey.
