Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition Thus. Hardback. 12mo. 135 mm by 77. pp x, 144. Frontis illus by Picart and 4 other engravings (one for each part) + 3 illus in text and a reproduction of the 1538 title page. The "Cymbalum mundi" was controversial from its first publication in 1537, which appeared under the pseudonym of Thomas du Clevier. This is the first of the Marchand re-editions. Clevier was persecuted and the book suppressed so that early copies are extremely rare. Its publisher, Jean Morin was himself arrested and subjected to interrogation. As for Des Perriers, he went into hiding and committed suicide,(says Henri Estienne.) Better written than most of the books of his time, its importance lies in the satirical allegories of Des Perriers, its irony, its duplicity in language, heresies and condemnable impiety. (Mechanical translation fronm a French catalogue) Recently rebound in half dark brown leather and marbled boards lettered gilt at the spine with 5 raised bands and gilt lining Very good indeed. Text and plates very clean.
