Hardcover. Probably ca 1830s. Original quarter black leather (spine) and cloth, approximately 3 1/2 x 6 inches, 465 pp, illustrated title page drawn by "Morse" (Samuel? ) and engraved by "Dick" (Alexander? ) + frontispiece. Hardcover, good to very good. Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and along edges of boards, cloth completely removed from rear board, spine scuffed along joints and at head and foot. Internally, previous owner's signature, "L. H. Lincoln, Bath Aug 26, 1839", and an interesting Civil War tie-in on reverse side of illustrated title page, "Hospital 31 Regiment N. Y. Vol. " (31st Regiment New York Volunteers) , free rear endpapers removed, foxed throughout, side edges of a half dozen or so adjoining leaves creased, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked and apparently never read. A common book, but a rather uncommon artifact of American history. Religion; Christian; Christianity; piety.

Hard Back. Etat : Very Good. viii + 216 pages. Undated, but BL date their copy to c1830. Condition: Decorative blind-stamped binding with gilt to spine design & title, all in very good condition, just very minor wear to edges. Contents Very good, clean & tight with gilt edges, inside front cover " John Hackney, Holbeach 1852". From research BL date their own copy to c1830, but very difficult to be 100% sure or an exact date as it is known this publisher not only did not always put a publication date, but when they reprinted, did not always put a date or edition either. Inscriptions are only a rough guide as it is known some bookshops kept books for well over 30 years if not sold, and John Hackney may not be the 1st owner. All we can be sure of, it is not later than 1852. I have seen listing mentioning an illustrated frontispiece, this copy does not have one and never had one, as very tight between endpage and title page with no room between. Size: 7 x 11cm Approx.
