Hardcover. Etat : Fair. First Edition. 2 parts in 1. Folio, 37 cm. vi, 567, 15, 68, [48] pp. Contemporary leather, raised bands, red leather spine label. Rubbing, minor scuffing to leather, chipping to head of spine. Front board and prelims detached, rear board starting. Lacking frontispiece portrait of Plowden. Occasional spotting and soiling. Early signature of John H. Peyton on end page. The 1761 English translation of the unabridged version of Les Commentaries, ou, Les Reportes. The book is a collection of case reports, and differs in two significant ways from the traditional early English Law reports or, Year Books. First, Plowden was the first eminent lawyer to publish a case book in his lifetime; second, the case notes focus on points of law and the judge's rulings instead of the pleading points that were so heavily prominent in the Year Books. This edition differs in several ways from Plowden's second edition of Les Commentaries. In addition to William Fleetwood's contribution of an analytical index, the 1761 addition contains Plowden's Queries, additional tables and notes, as well as references to newer legal sources not available at the time of the 1578 edition. "Plowden is regarded as the most accurate of all reporters" and his Reports "most deservedly [bear] as high a character as any book of Reports ever published." (J.G. Marvin, Legal Bibliography, or a Thesaurus of American, English, Irish and Scotch Law Books ,1847, 574-575.) BMC 20:518 (516). This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Recent flexible vellum, calf lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Title printed within typographical border. Moderate toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, faint dampstaining to lower margins of rear third of text block, light browning and some edgewear to preliminaries. Three (indecipherable) eighteenth-century signatures in miniscule hands to title page, brief early annotations and marks to margins of a few leaves. A nice copy. $650. * Second edition. Published around 1597, Ashe's was the first abridgment of Plowden. Well received, it had a second edition in 1607 and was reissued in an English translation in 1650. First published in 1571 and covering the period of 1550-1580, Plowden's Reports marks the transition away from the cumulative method of the Year Books to one based on exposition and commentary. In most respects it is a precursor of the modern reporter. English Short-Title Catalogue S114927.

Stamp of the Law Library of Los Angeles County on FFEP. An excellent candidate for rebinding. Scarce. Edmund Plowden (1518-1585) was highly respected and successful as a lawyer, but kept from the bench because he was Catholic. His reports were the first to include the names of the parties in the headings, providing a citation method that lawyers follow to this day; the first reports prepared for the press; the first collection of leading cases, "annotated by an editor at the head of the profession, which by including the pleadings enabled them to be studied in the context of litigation" (Biographical Dictionary of the Common Law). Reprinted numerous times, they were required reading for law students. In terms of their accuracy, organization, and balance, they were unsurpassed for centuries.
