4to. One-page, approximately 100 words. Gilmor (1774-1848), a merchant and collector, was "one of the most significant art collectors and patrons in the United States before 1850" (Lance Humphries, "Robert Gilmor, Jr. [1774-1848]: Baltimore Collector and American Art Patron," UVA Library online abstract). We have not been able to identify Mr. Kellogg; on verso of a blank integral leaf is a quick pencil sketch (5 x 3 cm), a profile chest-length portrait of a well-dressed gentleman. Old fold lines, but very good.

24pp. plus three folding maps. Modern cloth, gilt label. Minor occasional foxing in margins of text, maps clean and crisp. A fine copy. A report by Secretary of War Poinsett submitted to the United States Senate regarding the selection of a site for a fort on or near the western frontier of Arkansas, compiled in response to a request from Congressmen concerned with protecting settlers against Western Indian tribes. Pointsett indicates that "for such a post near the Arkansas line as will afford proper protection to the people of that State, there are two sites, possessing nearly equal advantages: these are at Fort Smith and that at the mouth of Lee's creek." The document reproduces two field reports by Lieutenant Colonel William Whistler and Captain John Stuart, officers in the Seventh Infantry, and four maps (printed on three sheets) describing these two areas. While indicating essential geographic features, the maps are notable for delineating townships and land tracts along the Arkansas River. Additional correspondence from Gen. M. Arbuckle concerning adjacent lands to be secured and from individuals interested in selling land to the government are also reproduced. Poinsett also submitted a separate report regarding the protection of the entire western frontier of the United States which was also published in 1838 in variant editions by the Senate and the House of Representatives.
