Etat : Fair. 1923. New impression. 262 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Brown illustrated cloth with gilt titles to spine. Expected library inserts, stamps and inscriptions. Illustrated by Yoshio Markino. Introduction by Douglas Sladen. Pages have deckled lower edges. Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. Foxing more noticeable towards the start and end of the book. Gutters cracked with exposed netting. Text block edges tanned and rather scratched. A few dog-eared corners. Boards have some edge wear, with heavy bumping and fraying to corners, while spine ends are heavily crushed and frayed. Rather scratched, rubbed and marked overall. Spine is noticeably sunned with a few droplet marks. Gilt is bright. Boards are slightly bowed.

The covers are quite rubbed and toned. The edges and corners are bumped and frayed, with the boards showing through at the corners. The crown and foot of the spine are bumped and frayed as well, with a large chip missing from the top of the spine. Front gutter is cracked but the boards are fine, attached. The pages inside are toned and foxed, but unmarked. Contains a few brown and white illustrations as well as text throughout.

Exterior is rich and clean. Gilt is bright.Minimal rubbing. Tips have minimal wear and top/bottom of spine with with modest crimping. Inside is unmarked, clear, and firmly bound. Only a hint of even toning. Very nice. Unusual to find this publisher's version and in this condition.

Small 4to, approximately 260 x 195 mm, 10¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 48 colour plates, including frontispiece plus 12 sepia plates, all mounted with tissue guards and captioned in red, pages: xxx, 1-262 including index, publisher's full pictorial cream vellum, gilt lettering to spine and upper cover, gilt picture to upper cover, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, marbled endapers. Spine slightly bumped at tail, corners a little worn at tips, spine slightly dusty, small pale mark to lower cover, 10 colour plates have pale foxing to margins, 8 very light and 2 a little heavy, pale foxing also to margins of 2 sepia plates, 1 heavy, occasional pale foxing to text margins, some tissue guards a little creased and foxed, pale age-browning to endpapers, tiny spot of adhesion to last endpaper and pastedown, otherwise a very good copy. YOSHIO MARKINO (1869 1956) Japanese artist and author who spent much of his life in London. In 1893 he enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco and stayed in the city for 4 years. In 1897 he returned to London, and settled in Chelsea where he lived until he died (1897-1942). The Colour of London got critical acclaim and was followed in 1908 by The Colour of Paris and The Colour of Rome, and in 1912 by The Charm of London.
