To lovers of music, they will be particularly interesting, as they throw valuable light on Puccini's success and popularity, not so easily won as many have imagined. in addition, these letters show the personality of the man, his family life, his love of sport, his swift changes from joy to gloom, his shattering disappointment at failure, his frank enjoyment of success. A thrilling volume for all opera-goers and music lovers."--dustjacket ; presents English translations of 240 letters ; foxing to flyleaf and title page ; slight wear to dustjacket, else FINE/VG. Quarto. Full red textured cloth with gilt titling to spine. 338 pp. Minor foxing to margins of frontispiece; title and last leaf browned; previous owner's name to front pastedown. First Edition of the fourth version. Hopkinson 6D. "La fanciulla del West is a remarkable instance of self-renewal on the part of a composer who would seem to have exhausted a vein in which feminine softness predominates. The opera's atmosphere is unyieldingly masculine, at times brutal, the harmonies more astringent than ever before with plentiful use of whole-tone chords and unresolved dissonances, the rhythms vigorous, sometimes syncopated and the lyrical moments comparatively few. The influence of Debussy and the Richard Strauss of Salome is clear, though, as always, perfectly integrated within the composer's personal style. Orchestrally La fanciulla del West is Puccini's most ambitious undertaking before Turandot." Gabriella Biagi Ravenni and Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.

Minor internal wear including some browning, foxing, and staining. First Edition, first issue of the first version of the opera. Hopkinson 7A. Schickling 78.E.1. La fanciulla del West, to a libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini after David Belasco's play The Girl of the Golden West, was first performed in New York at the Metropolitan Opera on 10 December 1910. "Orchestrally [the opera] is Puccini's most ambitious undertaking before Turandot, his forces including quadruple woodwind, two harps and an assortment of percussion, from all of which he distilled a vast range of instrumental colour from the delicate to the barbaric. Though it has never attained the easy popularity of its three predecessors, the opera has always won the respect of musicians." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online.

Oblong-small-8vo. 1 1/2 pp. Postcard to the Italian librettist, playwright and music critic Giuseppe Adami (1878-1946): Here I am back - Simoni wrote to me - but he didn't clarify what I wanted - about the telegram and correspondence from Croci, from which I received a regrettable letter about what happened. I would like to know why this is happening to me and who the discarder is. This was precisely what I was asking my friend - it seems that there is something going on. Are you working? Renato [Simoni] wrote to me about the ancient Venetian [La Fiaba di Turandot]. It seems willingly - I am still of the same opinion - and I am waiting. [ ]"Adami was best known for his collaboration with Giacomo Puccini on the operas La rondine (1917), Il tabarro (1918) and Turandot (1926). Sprache: it.
