A collection of short stories featuring life in small town America in the 1890s from Deland, a popular and bestselliing author in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She wrote a number of books set in Old Chester and populated with many memorably described small-town characters. Second edition, early printing 1899). About 5 1/4 x 71/2 inches, 360 pages in light green boards with "small townish" graphic adding yellow and white highlights to front cover. Lettering on spine in gold. Also of interest are the frontispiece and 15 other illustrations by Howard Pyle, a well-known and highly-rergarded illustrator and artist of this period. Boards are rubbed and worn and lightly bumped at the corners and spine ends but without significant damage. Front end page shows x-mas message crossed out by later owner. O/w, boards and text are clean and complete, hinges intact, binding firm. A collectable copy.

Neat gift inscription dated 1904 on the front endpaper, with a small rubber ink bookseller's stamp to the lower inside edge. The binding slightly cocked, but tight throughout and the contents clean. With 16 illustrations in black and white by Howard Pyle. This being the corrected issue of the first edition.
