Hardcover. Etat : Good. This antique school book, dating from 1880, was published by The American Book company in New York as part of the "Standard Supplementary Readers". "Seven American Classics", was Supplementary to the "Fifth Reader". It contains excerpts from the following famous authors, each of which is central to American literary history : Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry W. Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The book was compiled and edited by William Swinton and George R. Cathcart. **************************************** SERIES : Standard Supplementary Readers (Supplementary to Fifth Reader) / TITLE : Seven American Classics : Irving - Cooper - Bryant - Hawthorne - Longfellow - Whittier - Holmes / EDITORS : William Swinton and George R. Cathcart / IMPRINT : American Book Company / PLACE : New York- Cincinnati - Chicago / DATE : (©1880) / STATUS : Op Out of Print / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Hardcover School book published for the trade; contains a Preface; vi + 218 pages; approx. 4 3/4" x 7"; decorated ocher-colored, cloth-covered boards - on the front board lettering in black with various fonts, with floral decorative embellishments, and a twig border. The rear board has the publishers device of an owl stamped in black. Simple title in black on spine. ************************************ CONDITION - GOOD - This is a previously owned book which has seen considerable use, and displays wear, but remains clean, attractive and serviceable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed and frayed; spine surface is weathered and darkened; front board has mild weathering, moderate surface rub and a touch of abrasion; rear board similar with a bit more spotting and rub; board corner tips are bumped with attendant splitting to cloth; text-block edges are toned, else clear. / BINDING : The book has seen considerable use; there is a mend to the front hinge (with paper affixed over the hinge); the rear end-paper over the hinge is split, exposing mull; there is a slight lean of the entire binding to the front (this is hardly of any effect); No leaves are detached or loose, the whole remaining fairly solid. / INTERIOR : Scattered small spotting and smudging; a few small ink stains; vague scattered foxing. Basically clean throughout, although I did spot a bit of penciled annotation (see picture provided above) - no other writing was evident, and the interior is basically clean and serviceable. No signatures. A nice specimen of late 19th century American school books.
