Acetate cover is rubbed, a large triangular piece is missing from the back, binding sound, front endpage has a gift inscription, internally clean. "There are both despair and exaltation in the faces that Reiss portrayed. One often gets the impression that these faces had previously existed in our great history. These eyes have seen more than the anxieties and the hopes of our century. They enhance in us the belief in reincarnation. Although it is only forty years ago that Lionel S. Reiss began to draw and paint the Jews of eastern Europe, there is already a scarcity of records of these people. Even good photographs are few. There is no doubt in my mind that for what he has done, Lionel S. Reiss will be remembered, and that those who will write about Jewish life in the eastern Europe of his day, whether history or fiction, will be forever grateful to him for this monument to a vanished people." ?from the Preface by Isaac Bashevis Singer.
