Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. "A realistic account of the Chinese Communist Army by a U.S. Army officer, who gained his intimate knowledge of this huge, incongruous force the hard way." This copy is ex-USAF library, and sports a rubber stamp impression on the half title and copyright page reading "Personnel Services | Library Depot, HQ WADF | AF 2411 LO", and has "United States Air Force" stamped on top and bottom edges. 5-3/4" x 8-1/2", xiv + 378pp. Sewn binding in yellow cloth-coloured boards with yellow head and tail bands. Cover is decorated with silk screened title block and illustration of fighting horde in black with the title (in English and Chinese) in red. Spine, which is slightly faded, sports different screened illustration / design in red and black. Rear board is internally separated from paste down sheet adjacent to spine but remains firmly attached. Binding is square and sound. There is a 1" horizontal closed tear in from the fore edge midway up the title page. In addition to the previously noted rubber stamp impression, on the copyright page, in black fountain pen, is written: "A4966 | 52-111A | 3.75". The same notation appears on the back paste down, and on the back free end paper are the remains of cellophane tape used to attach a card pocket, since lost. Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Trade PB. 8vo. Published by The Military Service Publishing Company, Harrisburg, PA. 1955. 239 pgs. Wrappers worn with some shelf-wear to the extremities present (wrappers are lightly worn). Previous owner's name present to the bottom edge. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. "This book springs from the pronounced reaction of the several thousand men I have trained under conditions of combat realism, and from my own convictions of its necessity. The chapters to follow speak for many. In the support of realism in training, I have experienced strong and genuine support from those above and below me. The only point of argument has been: "How best to implement realism?" This text deals with implementation. Its primary mission is to provide imaginative ideas, acknowledging that no single person, service, or staff has a monopoly on imagination. The men who have experienced the measures of realism I projected in training, have always wanted and asked for more--not in degree--but in more hours and days of it. Realistic training is dangerous, unless carefully controlled. This training is conducted under rigid control and safety supervision. Of the very few "casualties" resulting from the variety of courses and exercises I have conducted, I became the only serious hospital case. Of negative reaction, there were two soldiers who foolishly blasted a tree down on themselves and swore to get the author for creating a course that would kill them. Battles are fought by rifle squads, tank crews and companies, artillery batteries and battalions, combat engineer platoons, and multiplied combinations of these elements. This text is devoted to the training of these men and those who immediately support them. This text is not designed to develop strategy, or tactics, but to help these units"--Preface. EB.
