Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good binding. Octavo. xx, 264 pp., frontis, plates. First American edition. As issued, in brown, embossed cloth with title in gold on the spine. Relatively light shelfwear including some fraying at the spine ends and corners as well as some insect predation that has taken the cloth off the bottom edge of the rear board; 19th century bookplate of George Smith, M.D. on the front pastedown as well as his name and date on the recto of the top corners of the frontis and title page. Internally, a clean copy with engraved frontispiece and 14 numbered plates after Theodor de Bry's engravings for Hariot's, "A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia." According to Howes it is "[a]fter John Smith, the first account of this colony, the first one penned by a native and the best contemporary record of [Virginia's] aboriginal tribes and of the life of its early settlers" Howes B-410. Originally issued in 1705 followed by second edition in 1722; there were also several French language editions printed early in the 18th century. Though a century and a half after its first appearance, this is the first American edition. Sabin 5114.

First American Edition. 264pp. An uncommon edition of one of Robert Beverley's important contemporary history of Virginia first published in London in 1705, this edition -- the First American -- taken from the Second Revised Edition, London, 1722. "After John Smith, the first account of this colony, the first one penned by a native and the best contemporary record of its aboriginal tribes and of the life of it's early settlers" [Howes B-410]. With a handsome engraved frontispiece of the arms of the Colony of Virginia, and 14 additional engravings after Theodor de Bry's engravings for the first part of Hariot's important work on Virginia. ~~This copy rebound by J. P. Bell in Lynchburg; in half calf over cloth. Ownership signature of H. F. Hutcheson of Boydton, Virginia. Light pencil marks throughout. (Sabin 5114; Howes B410). Very Good binding.

First American Edition. 264pp. In publisher's brown embossed cloth; early reback in sympathetic cloth with much of the original backstrip, including the gold stamped title, laid down; light shelfwear to the extremities; previous owner donation plate on the front pastedown; "duplicate" stamp on the verso of the second blank leaf is the only indication that this is from an institutional collection; light foxing/toning. 14 engravings after Theodor de Bry's engravings for Hariot's "A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia."
