Leather at spine dry and cracked; title labels missing. Text block snug and clean; prior ownership ink stamp top corner of front endpage. Text block VG but binding poor.

Original text has been rebound in brown leatherette boards that are in very good condition. Binding is good. Pages are toned and foxed. In addition to missing pages noted above, one of the contents pages has a long, wrinkled tear. Some underlining and markings in pencil throughout. LO.

Contemporary brown full calf, gilt scallop and rose decoration around both upper and lower covers, gilt lettering and decorations on the backstrips, speckled edges, matching set of five books. Slight rubbing of the joints, Vol. 1 has 10mm crack in the leather near the of foot of the upper board, no half-titles otherwise a VG plus clean set with sound hinges. The Works are the sixth edition, the Reliques second edition 1813, all five volumes printed by J. M'Creery of London. The full titles are: The Works of Robert Burns with an Account of his Life, and a Criticism on his Writings. To which are prefixed, some observations on the character and condition of the Scottish Peasantry. AND Reliques of Robert Burns; Consisting Chiefly of Original Letters, Poems, and Critical Observations on Scottish Songs. Collected and Published by R. H. Cromek.
