The story within a story is mainly about the Fraziers, the sole inhabitants of an isolated desert oasis watered by an underground river. It is here that family friend and famous painter of desert scenes, Galen Andrews, tells the story of Frazier to his chauffeur, Croy, who is the first person protagonist of our story. Frazier, a bitter ex-marine with a bullet wound, arrives at the oasis and falls in love with the desert and the unusual people that he encounters. There's also a blossoming romance and a search for hidden treasure. Willard Robertson (1886 - 1948), in addition to being a writer, was a prolific character actor who appeared in 147 films between 1924 and 1948. He began his career as a lawyer, but with a strong interest in writing and acting that led him to switch careers. In the early 1920s, two of his plays were adapted into films. As a writer, he is best known for the novel Moon Tide (1940) which was turned into the noir thriller Moontide (1942).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Although this edition contains no internal plates, it does feature scenes from the 1942 Jean Gabin-Ida Lupino film to front and spine panels of the "very good" jacket (which is chipped to head & heel of spine), and is thus generally counted a "photoplay" edition. Pages considerably age-browned but still flexible & easily read. A considerate previous owner has clipped out a small "blurb" about the 1942 film and tacked it to the FFE with a small piece of tape, covering the name of the (we presume) EARLIER previous owner Helen Morin. This title is hard to find in any dust jacket. A noir romance among the lowlifes of the waterfront, filmed (20th Century Fox, 1942) as a classic entry in the noir sub-genre now dubbed poetic realism by Archie Mayo and Fritz Lang (the latter uncredited), screenplay by John O'Hara and Nunnally Johnson (also uncredited) with the novel's Swede transposed into a Frenchman so the film could star Jean Gabin, with Ida Lupino (as the waif Ada), Thomas Mitchell and Claude Rains. (Oscar nomination for best B&W cinematography, Charles G. Clarke.) A prominent playwright, director, and actor on the New York stage who was lured to Hollywood to play Jackie Cooper's stern but loving father in the Oscar-winning drama Skippy (1931) and its sequel Sooky (also 1931), author Robertson also played Captain Winthrop in the 1936 version of "Last of the Mohicans," a flamboyant lawyer in "Remember the Night" (1940) and the straight sheriff in "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943), eventually being cast (usually as men of authority such as doctors, elected officials, or military officers) in 147 films. Where he found time to also write novels we don't know, though they do say film actors are mostly paid to sit around, waiting. 309 pp. Reduced from $115.
