An epic work chronicling successive crises confronting creative genius. The central character, Jean-Christophe Krafft, is a German musician (modeled on Beethoven, on whom Rolland had earlier written a biography) of Belgian extraction, composer of genius whose life knew great hardships & spiritual struggles before finding peace on final return home a decade later. Also read as a tale of friendship between a young German and a young Frenchman symbolizing the possibility of harmony of opposites that Rolland believed could be fostered between nations of the world.
