Octavo, pp. [1-10] 1-319 [320-322: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], eleven inserted plates, several double page, with black and white illustrations by Joseph Clement Coll, publisher's dark green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. Protagonist awakens in a grim world of the future dominated by socialism and science and learns that legend has made him a kind of messiah. He leads a successful revolt against the establishment. The story, first published in EVERYBODY'S MAGAZINE as a four-part serial, June-September 1917, is one of the earliest American dystopian novels. "A more considerable work than is generally recognized, despite the pulp adventure aspects. One can find among the author's ultraconservative values such Orwellian anticipations as omnipresent slogans, euphemistic terms for horrible institutions, the artificial language Spikisi, the mechanics of thought control, and the apparatus of the police state. While the book is a deutero-WHEN THE SLEEPER WAKES, it is independent in detail, and much Rousseau's best work." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1922. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-131; (1981) 1-143; and (2004) II-927. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 662. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 46. Lower rear corner tip bruised, spine ends pushed, a couple of mild scuffs to cloth, page edges tanned, a tight, very good copy with bright cover stamping. An attractive copy. Nice copies of this book are uncommon. (#172900).
