Hardcover. Etat : Good. A reprint of the 'Popular Edition', with 22 illustrations including a tissue-protected frontispiece, and two folding maps. 8vo. xviii, 416pp + xxxii publisher's catalogue dated June 1898. Burgandy cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine with a series of blind-stamped ruled to the upper and lower margins of both boards. Top edge dust soiled and with a trace of wear to the corner tips, and some bruising to the backstrip ends. Former owner name inkstamped to a blank preliminary. Quite a nice, bright copy. A personal account of Rudolf Slatin's service in Sudan, including a detailed narrative of the Battle of Shaykan (1883), after which he was captured and held for eleven years before finally escaping. This shortened 'popular edition' omits much of the historical matter focusing instead on the author's personal experiences.

Some minor spotting/foxing to endpapers. Good. Previous owner's small ex libris labels to endpapers. Translated by F. R. Wingate. Title pages are dated 1896, which is the date this book was first published (UK edition, Edward Arnold), however, Tauchnitz followed the unusual practice of retaining the first printing date on the title page of later printings, with no indication of the date of actual printing. Sir Rudolf Carl von Slatin (1857-1932) was an Austrian author, Major-general, and colonial administrator who served under the Ottoman empire in Turco-Egyptian Sudan. Fire and Sword covers his career as the Governor of Dara, and his campaigns in the Mahdist war against the followers of Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi or Messiah. He took part in various campaigns against the Mahdists, as well as working as an intelligence agent, sending reports to British and Ottoman agents in Cairo. Slatin was captured by the Mahdists during the Fall of Darfur and spent over eleven years as prisoner, being forced to serve as an orderly for the Mahdi and his successor, the Khalifa, but continued to send intelligence, before staging a daring escape across the desert to Egypt. Following his escape the Khedive of Egypt raised him to the rank of Pasha. When his account was published in England, it led to a public outcry over the fate of the Sudan, and pushed public opinion towards the idea of reconquest of the Sudan.

The "Popular Edition", revised by the author, the binding decorated and in colour of the first printing. With 22 illustrations by R. Talbot Kelly who worked under the direct supervision of the author plus a folding plan of Khartum and Omdurman and a folding map. 8vo, publisher s original maroon cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, blind framework to the covers. xviii, (2),416pp and 32pp ads. A very fine copy, attractive, bright, tight and well preserved, unusual thus, just a hint of spotting to the fore-edges and prelims. AN IMPORTANT BOOK AND AN UNCOMMONLY FINE AND BRIGHT COPY. "Slatin Pasha was by far the most important of the European prisoners in the Soudan. Before the Mahdi s victories he held the post of Governor of Darfur, and was in command of large military forces. He fought no fewer than twenty-seven pitched battles before he was compelled to surrender, and is the only surviving soldier who has given an eye-witness account of the terrible fighting that occurred during the Mahdist struggle for supremacy. He was present as a prisoner during the siege of Khartoum, and it was to his feet that Gordon s head was brought in revengeful triumph within an hour of the city s fall. The narrative is brought up to the time when Slatin Pasha s marvelous escape took place, and the incidents of his captivity have been so indelibly graven on his memory that his account of them has all the freshness of a romance. From a military and historical standpoint the book is of the highest value. Slatin Pasha s various expeditions penetrated into regions as yet almost unknown to Europeans, but destined apparently to be the subject of serious complications in the near future. The map of these regions is believed to be the first authentic one produced. There is also a careful ground plan of Khartoum and Omdurman, which might be of immense service in case of military operations."-Publishers comment.
