Her husband, William Harkness, zoologist and adventurer, had headed an expedition to capture Giant Pandas, but died before he even entered the habitat. Ruth traveled into Wenchuang County of Sichuan Province, then onto Baoxing County where she discovered the cub less then 2 kilometers from Jiajin Mountain, and was later donated to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. N/A (illustrateur). First Edition. This is a truly rare and remarkable book written and published as Japan was invading China in the Pacific precursor to WW II. Under war conditions the author was singularly determined to rescue the Giant Panda and to save the species in the only certain way possible which was in an American zoo. The story is riveting as are the accompanying pictures of the baby Giant Panda that was to gain so much world fame. The Panda remains endangered and also remains the subject of much affection and delight and is certain to gain even more appeal as the summer Olympics in China approach. This is a very special and rare book and the best condition copy available anywhere. Appears once read with a stight binding and clean interior.
