Illustration "Queen Hyacinth" on pp 150 has been colorized with crayon or pastel (tastefully). DJ shows light surface rubbing effecting colors. Scattered light rubbing and chipping along jacket edges. Both spine ends of jacket are missing 1/4".

Small quarto, original light gray cloth with pictorial paper label in colors on front board; 312 pp. including 8 pp. publisher advertisements at rear, 12 full-page color plates including plate at page 255 with typographical error in plate caption (Scarecrow's misspelled "Scarecorw's." This error is found only in the first printing, all later issues were corrected. Bibliographia Oziana states that inspite of the title page credit as editor, Ruth Plumly Thompson deserves full credit as sole author of this Oz book. Bibliographia Oziana (2nd edition) #15. Skinned area at lower right corner of pictorial label on front board, front inner hinge weak but holding, previous owner name in pencil at top of front free endpaper, 2 short tears to bottom of title page, fore-edge of title page slightly soiled,else text and plates very clean.

Book is VG or better except that fifty pages or so have the top corner torn away where someone, probably a child marked the place with a tear rather than a dogear. There is some light wear to the book otherwise, but this is a very attractive copy. The jacket appears to be from a later issue and has wear, tape repairs, chips, tears and scuffs. While it is still presentable, it is in the Fair to Good range. This was one of Ruth Plumly Johnson's contributions to the Oz canon and is the first of these books not to have any color illustrations beyond the cover art. ; Cover Art and B&W Drawings; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 306 pages.
