Full Calf. Etat : Near Very Good. Second Edition. Book measures 40x26.cm. [8],878,[24],[1]pp, 68 full page plates, 5 double page, 25 within text, plus genealogies, of which 2 are folding. Bound in full period panelled calf, raised bands, leather title label. Binding rubbed, worn on edges, with loss, boards holding by binders cord. Internally, previous owners bookplate, one page has a short closed tear, very occasional minor staining. Pages and plates in good clean condition. A nice clean copy, in a worn, but good period binding. Size: Folio.

An excellent copy of the expanded second edition of this beautifully engraved historical work on the monarchs of England. The uncommon second edition of this impressive and richly illustrated genealogical account of the British monarchy. The work of Anglo-Irish herald and genealogist Francis Stanford, who first published this work in 1677. This is the second, edition, updated and continued to the year 1707 by Somersetshire herald Samuel Stebbing, and is therefore also a first edition thus, featuring many new illustrations also.Illustrated with seventy-six full page engravings, six folding plates, and one folding genealogical table. These illustrations are the work of Robert Gaywood, Francis Barlow, and Wenceslaus Hollar. Collated, complete.These engravings depict seals and funerary monuments, and the elaborate headpieces incorporate medallion portraits. Wenceslaus Hollar was a famed Bohemian graphic artist of the seventeenth century, and one of the most prolific artists of his time. With the inscription of M Ayerson Longstaff to the head of the title page.Tipped in between pages 604 and 605 is a former owner's three leaf handwritten copy of the transcript of 'State Papers. Vol XXXIV, Council of State. Day's Proceedings' of March 19th 1865.ESTC reference no. T147652A fascinating and detailed guide to the monarchs of England between 1066 and 1707. Rebound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Original gilt calf back strip laid down. Externally, excellent. Front hinge lightly starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Discolouration and handling marks to title page. Pages generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot or light handling mark. Former owner's notes bound in between pages 604 and 605. Very Good. book.
