Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. Morris Scott Dollens, Neil Austin (illustrateur). 1st Edition. Glendale, CA: (Science-Fiction Advertiser), 1952. Volume V, No. 5, the January, 1952 issue of Science-Fiction Advertiser; this is the new name and (somewhat) new, longer form of the earlier incarnation, Fantasy Advertiser fanzine. Roy Squires had taken over editing from Norman "Gus" Wilmorth by this time, and wasn't far from bringing it into its heyday. Though longer and a bit richer, at this time the fanzine was still focused almost entirely on book reviews and ads, and apart from Morris Scott Dollens carried little in the way of interior art and virtually no fiction.yet. Even the reviews, essays and articles gave precious little credit to the writers, who were often the editor or his assistants. None of that would last.Cover is by Dollens, with another inside by him, and the back cover is by Neil Austin. Both would do much more work for the fanzine later. Octavo, stapled wraps, 33 numbered pages. Near Fine copy, with only the inevitable modest toning to the paper and a tiny closed tear at rear cover top. See scans. High grade. Very sharp, undamaged copy. An early example of the uniquely American sci-fi / fantasy fanzine genre. One or two interesting articles per issue, and some illustrations, but still, in 1952, largely book reviews, ads and a bit of opinion. See scan of contents page for this issue's offerings. Nicely executed book reviews. A classic issue from a fanzine classic from the golden age of sci-fi with all its special genres; replete with the detailed trappings of that world - Science fiction, fantasy and horror, of course. But mostly the sci-fi. Very scarce under this name, the second of three. For the collector. L-pr2.

Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with this very November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 34 pp. About Near Fine, showing just age toning and a corner crease. See scans. This late 1954 issue was the start of something new under Smith; not much interior art yet - but there would be in 1955 and 1956. May, 1955 / issue number 9 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). January, 1955 / issue number 7 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 38 pp. Near Fine; thin peripheral toning (see scans). This January / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was in the process of improving the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. Stapled Wraps. Etat : Near Fine. Morris Scott Dollens, Neil Austin, Lin Carter, Cindy, Pat Patterson, and Dan Adkins (illustrateur). First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. The May, 1956 issue (Inside number 15, whole number 49), the tenth anniversary edition, of Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser. Previous names: Fantasy Advertiser, then Science Fiction Advertiser. Octavo, stapled wraps, 38 pp. + covers. About Near Fine, showing only perimeter sunning (see scan). In addition to Dollens' cover art, there are interior illustrations by Neil Austin, Lin Carter, "Cindy", Pat Patterson, and Dan Adkins. Smith's memorable science fiction fanzine, originated by Norman "Gus" Willmorth under the earlier names and edited by him through November 1949, was long a compendium of SF book reviews and ads, and still is here; but, by this time, there were also non-fiction contributions by some of the better-known names in Sci-fi, and the page count was a bit higher. Herein, in addition to the standard fare, are "SFA: The First Ten Years", Robert Silverberg's detailed history of this fanzine; "H.P. Lovecraft: The Books", the second part (of 3) of Lin Carter's study of books mentioned by H.P. Lovecraft in his works; "Worst Foot Forward" by Robert Bloch,a criticism of the adverse effect (a "crash" in sci-fi, retrospectively non-existent, really) he then felt that bandwagon-ism had recently had on Science Fiction; and a collector-valuable historical chart of the fanzine, by issue and editor.
