Self-printed softcovers, futuristic concept art of Space Needle towering over the Science Center, with ALWEG monorail, and pre-Fair concept of the Skyride before it's construction featuring colourful open gondolas (minor edgewear, small tear lower corner front cover, light toning, 1 small closed tear), still VG- copy; 2nd - Three colour-photo postcards, sized 3.5 x 5.5 in., split-back, all detailing trip to Seattle and the World's Fair, from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald (1892-1977), stepson of famed southern California oil man William F. Byrne, as well as oil company, and drilling equipment company owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers, to whom they are addressed. First edition, thus, of this nicely illustrated Seattle street map for the Century 21 Seattle World's Fair in 1962, from Standard Oil of California. The three postcards from "Ada" describe the trip, beginning with "May get out to see the Fair Next Week;" followed by Aug. 26, 1962 describing "We expect to go to the Fair tomorrow." Next postcard she writes that she "certainly have enjoyed my trip here, and stay too short." Very nice juxtaposition on one of the cards with early 1950's Buick featuring the tooth grille below the futuristic ALWEG monorail cruising past, and Space Needle in the distance.

One large colour lithographed poster, sized 20.75 x 30.75 in., on a thick paper stock, with sharp bright original colour, no age toning, very slight creasing to upper right corner, or other very slight age imperfections of the era, shrunk-wrap on archival foam core. First edition of this Elffers poster promoting the World of Art exhibition at the Fine Arts Pavilion in the Century 21 Seattle World's Fair in 1962. The Fine Arts Pavilion contained five main galleries, and opened the fair with the six separate exhibits as listed, with the Masterpieces of Art replaced after Sept. 3, 1962 with Northwest Painting & Sculpture, Adventures in Art, and Countries of the Pacific Rim. Elffers (1910-1990) was a noted Dutch artist, illustrator, painter, printmaker, book binding designer, sculptor, ceramic artist, and photographer, whose work was first displayed at the Rijksmuseum in 1939. Although not credited, the consistent lower case lettering here without punctuation may have been designed by Willem Sandberg (1897-1984) who also worked the Seattle World's Fair Art Catalogue, and was the art director of the Stedelijk Museum, and this was a signature style of his. Elffers also created individual posters for each of the exhibits, including Art since 1950 which graced covers of programs, with an example of "art since 1950" held at MOHAI in Seattle.

One large colour lithographed poster, sized 20.5 x 29 in., on a thick textured paper stock, with sharp bright original colour, slight age toning, one very small closed tear w/in image at upper fore-edge expertly repaired, or other very slight age imperfections of the era, still a NF copy, shrunk-wrap on archival foam core, preserved with the original illustrated mailing tube stamped "Mts. and Fair." First edition of this Bonath poster promoting the Century 21 Seattle World's Fair in 1962. This official World's Fair poster based on an abstract painting by Harry Bonath centers on the Space Needle in the fore-ground, with Mount Rainier and the Cascades stretching behind. This painting unlike the Matthiesen concept art, or the Earle Duff Official World's Fair poster depicts the Space Needle in its' Century 21 paint scheme. Bonath (1903-1976) studied under Maynard Dixon and John Gerrity, operated a studio in Sacramento from 1918-1926, and by 1927 was one of the "California Style" school of modern-advertising artists who flocked to Seattle in the 1920's through post-War era. He worked as the cover illustrator for the Seattle Sunday Times magazine, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and operated his advertising art studio until his death. Although often reproduced in a variety of formats, the original posters are quite scarce, especially with the original mailing tube sporting the wraparound Space Needle artwork. Worldcat locates 2 copies (WA State Hist. Soc., MOHAI).
Edité par W. Phillips, European Office, 9, rue d'Artois, [Century 21 Exposition, Inc.],, Seattle, WA; Paris, France:, 1962
Vendeur : Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, Etats-Unis
One large colour lithographed poster, sized 26 x 40.25 in., on a thicker paper stock than the American issue, with sharp bright original colour, no age toning, closed tears, or other age imperfections of the era, archivally mounted on linen backing sized 30 x 44.25 in. First European issue of this iconic poster touting the Century 21 Seattle World's Fair in 1962, for the French & German travel agencies, interested institutions, and businesses. The Century 21 Commission had secured a certification from the International Bureau of Expositions, and the Space Needle conceived by Ed Carlson, designed by architects Jack Graham, John Ridley and Victor Steinbrueck transformed the Seattle skyline. This poster features the Federal Science Pavilion (later the Pacific Science Center), the Alweg Monorail in the fore-ground, with the Space Needle pointing towards the stars. This rendering does not include the paint scheme which would adorn the Space Needle for the run of the Fair in 1962. Duff (1927-2009), was a World War II Navy veteran, and successful Canadian-American Seattle commercial artist who worked for John "Jack" Graham who produced the final saucer design of the Space Needle, at the John Graham & Co. Architectural & Design firm in Seattle. Duff may have collaborated as well on several of the other conceptual architectural renderings for the Fair from the firm, but unlike this poster, bore no Artist's initials, or name.
